Ruth still didn't look up, keeping her eyes on the grass. She closed her eyes, wondering what to do. Could she really tell Nessie anything like she said? Would she really not be angry at her. Ruth then remembered when she was younger and would try to hide a wrong from her parents. 'You can tell us,' her mother would say, 'Don't worry.' Then, of course, that'd be only to face their disappointment. She wasn't mad at her mother for that, not at all, whenever her mom was mad at her, she had every right to be so. So did Nessie. But Ruth was a coward and wanted to delay Nessie figuring out the truth about her as long as possible.
"My..." said Ruth, looking up slightly, but still not looking Nessie in the eye, "My parents have told me not to worry about telling them what I've done wrong....you'll just hate me too...I'm not a serial killer, but," said Ruth, closing her eyes tightly, "I've been thinking...unpure thoughts."

Nessie relaxed visibly at that, smiling a little. So, it wasn't anything she had said. "Oh, Ruth, there's nothing wrong with that," she assured her friend. "You're, what, seventeen, eighteen? It's when we start figuring out all that crazy mating stuff. You won't burst into flames for thinking about a guy." And here would come her downfall. It didn't occur to Nessie at all that Ruth's thought might be centered around girls, not guys. It was times like these when she assumed that she got into the worst situations.

Ruth sighed in relief that Nessie wasn't mad at her but closed her eyes when she said 'guy.' "You're not mad?" Ruth said in relief. Well, she didn't have to tell ALL of what she was thinking about, did she? At least Nessie could think she wasn't...unatural. Impure was one thing; unatural was a whole 'nother thing.
"But..." said Ruth, biting her lips, "I shouldn't be thinking these things...it's..it's wrong." It was wrong, oh much wrong than Nessie thought.

"Of course I'm not," Nessie assured her with a smile. "Why would I be mad at you for being a normal teenage girl? It'd be pretty hypocritical of me." She wouldn't admit to it, but she had been entertaining some pretty interesting thoughts about Jacob lately. Thank God neither her father or Elizabeth had been in the room at the time. That would've been an incredibly awkward conversation that she wasn't anywhere near ready to have. "Honey, it's not wrong, I promise. Don't beat yourself up over it."
