And just like that, Nessie was crying all over again, all because Jacob didn't know when to keep his big mouth shut. He squeezed her hand and pulled her closer, hugging her again. Just great, he had gone and made her feel worse than she had when she had walked in. He was supposed to make her feel better, god damn it. At the present time, he was feeling like a bad protector, if he was going to trouble the one person who was his other half like this. Still, she felt the need to ask more questions. He supposed he owed her an explanation, or at least a version of it. Jacob was, naturally, biased. Whether he and Edward were on good terms or not, he still hated him for doing that to Bella, even if he wasn't in love with her anymore.
"Nessie, your dad has a bad habit of underestimating how much a human being can care about someone. That was his mistake back then. He figured that Bella would forget about him and move on, and that she'd be better off for it. Kinda stupid, I know. I really don't think I would have bought it at the time, even if he had graced me with a better greeting than a glare back then." Okay, so his old hatred of Edward was creeping into his voice. But he was past that now...it was just bringing this whole stupid scenario up that brought it on. It wasn't as if he was going to be glaring at Edward the next time he saw him. Even if he wanted to, he wanted to be able to enjoy Nessie's company more and fighting with her father wouldn't have been smart if that was what he wanted.

It really wasn't that big of a deal. it had to have happened at least eleven, maybe twelve years ago. She knew that both her parents were long since over it. Despite all this, Nessie was upset anyway, and the idea of her father leaving was devastating. Besides, he'd left once. With the new bickering that was going on now, who was to say he wouldn't be able to do it again, if it got to be too much? The idea made her stomach roll, and she felt a little sick. So, she decided not to think about it, instead shifting closer to Jacob and hoping her breathing evened soon. God, this was embarrassing. But, in a way, she'd kind of brought this on herself. If she hadn't asked, she wouldn't have known, and she wouldn't be doing this now. But what if this was how it was supposed to work?
The hostility in Jacob's voice as he replied made her jump a little. She hadn't realized he held that much animosity toward her father. Nessie knew that Jacob and her mother had been, still were, close friends, but there was no need for him to be this angry about what had happened. "But, that's stupid!" she argued weakly. "He knew full well that she loved him more than anything. Why didn't anyone talk him out of it? Alice, Carlise... They should've said something!" The more she thought about it, though, the more his anger seemed justified.

Jacob was pretty sure that she seemed just a little green as she processed this whole thing. Great, just great. He pressed his lips together and stroked her hair, trying hard to be comforting again. If he could do it once, he could certainly do it twice, especially since it was his own damn fault that Nessie was feeling this way. And it was probably safe to say that the old hatred in his voice didn't help her at all. But he didn't hate Edward, not anymore. Things were actually all right between them, and the worst thing between them was the fact that their noses couldn't stand the other's scent. No biggy. They could live with that, and they had long since left their stupid rivalry behind them. Then again, it ran pretty deep back then...he supposed resentment was bound to stick around, in slight traces.
As for her question, well...Jacob only knew the answer from snippets that he had heard. Honestly, the whole ordeal wasn't talked about much between anyone who was involved. "I think they tried...but you also have to remember that your parents are the most stubborn people in the world." People. Wow, it was amazing how just a little over a decade ago, he had said that vampires didn't count as people. Funny what could change in that amount of time; even the most certain things turned out to be far from it. "Edward thought he was killing Bella by hanging around, so he just left and told them to do the same. Bonehead thing to do, I know, but I think he's learned his lesson...he's not going anywhere."
After all, when you mention something like a previous separation when someone's parents are arguing, that was probably going to cause some panic. Was it really any wonder why Nessie was freaking out? Hell, he'd be freaking out.

A few deep breaths and the room stopped spinning, at least. The waves of nausea passed, and Nessie was thinking that making a mad dash for the nearest sink or garbage can wasn't going to be necessary. Thank God, she thought gratefully. That would've been the icing on this whole mortifying cake, if she'd actually hurled from all this. She swallowed hard against the bile that rose threateningly up in the back of her throat as if to tease her, willing her stomach to calm down. Besides, her reaction seemed to really be doing a number on Jacob, and she hated seeing him upset. So, she put on a brave face and tried to change the subject.
"Well, good, 'cause Mom's gone nuts enough as it is. Anyway, what needs fixing today? Besides me, that is. You've always got some odd project going on in the cave." Even though she didn't understand half of what Jacob did in there, it was interesting to watch him work. Especially when he got really involved and forgot she was even there. She zoned out a bit thinking of it, having etched every detail of his face when he was absorbed in a project into her memory. A little crease formed between his brows like he was thinking really hard, his forehead scrunched up as well. Every now and then he'd start talking to himself, which was just the funniest damn thing she'd ever seen.

Despite his hopes that it wouldn't come to that, Jacob was fully prepared to get Nessie to the bathroom as quickly as possible (which, thankfully, was pretty damn quick, mind you) if her nausea became too much. It was the least he could do, after all. However, it seemed like the proper color came back to her face, the typical porcelain with just the slightest bit of pink on her cheeks. He smiled a bit upon realizing that. With her simple words about how Bella's sanity was hanging by a thread, Jacob knew that this conversation was over. He figured that he wouldn't mention how exactly the story ended. They didn't need to dump it on her all at once, and honestly, he was just happy that she was feeling better.
He supposed now he understood by Edward occassionally kept things from Bella to protect her. Jacob knew that it wasn't right, but seeing Nessie like that was hard enough. No one could blame him. Which was why he chuckled at her suggestion of working on some bit of machinery. It was his day off, but hey, why not? If that was what Nessie wanted, that was what she was going to get. "Excellent suggestion Nessie. I do believe I have a bike to fix," he answered, the tone of his voice back to normal as if he hadn't just explained why his best friend was heart broken in her senior year. "I guess you want to come with?" He would wait until she got up, of course. Much as he didn't mind carrying her, he was pretty sure that she needed to get up on her own terms.

"I figured as much," Nessie replied with a smirk, glad to her Jacob's voice go back to normal. Even though the conversation hadn't been (and wouldn't be) forgotten, it was easier just to pretend that everything was okay. Each hated to see theother in pain, so faking it made it better for everyone involved. "You usually do have something to work on in there. And no, I thought I'd sit in here and keep the furniture company." The sarcasm was kept up as easily between them as it was between her parents.
Rising to her feet, she did her best not to fall over from the intensity of her knees shaking. The emotions she felt today were all but overwhelming, and it sounded pretty good to just sink into the couch and let today be over with. But, if she did that, Jacob would freak out, and she didn't want him to worry any more than he already had today. "Lead the way," she said, taking his other hand just in case her knees did give out on her.
((Sorry it's short, I'm in school and the bell's about to ring.))

Jacob smirked, relieved that for now, the nasty subject of abandonment and past mistakes was closed. He knew better than to assume that it was completely over, of course. Nessie didn't forget things like that; no one did. But that didn't matter so long as she was smiling now. "Well, yeah. It's one of those inevitable things that come with fixing things; people develop a nasty habit of dumping their things in my garage," he quipped, letting out a laugh as the girl started standing up. However, when she got to her feet, he realized just how much she was shaking. So much for things being all hunky dory.
However, it was once again clear that Nessie didn't want to continue this, because she soon steadied herself and turned to him. He pulled himself up, gladly taking her hands (for her own sake, would be his story if anyone asked for whatever reason). "Will do, Miss Cullen," he stated, taking on the stance of an escort to some elegant party for a moment before laughing and leading her outside. It wasn't too long before he was searching through his garage for that bike. "Well, it can at least be said that I keep this place packed." He chuckled after finding the bike and pulling it out, along with some tools.
"You know, sometimes I feel like I don't keep you occupied enough when I'm doing this kind of stuff. You sure you don't mind?" He wasn't normally the type to be polite about these things, but this was Nessie he was entertaining. She deserved the best. ((*giggles* Lucky you, being able to get away with that. That ALONE deserves a karma point. ))

((lol, that's only because I was in a class where we have a lot of free time anyway, we had a sub, and the school didn't block the site. xD))
Nessie laughed at his reply, shaking her head. "Not that you mind, of course. If people didn't dump stuff in your garage, you'd be bored out of your skull and you know it. God forbid you not have some pile of scrap metal to make glorious," she teased with a smirk. Even if he complained about it sometimes, she knew he loved fixing things up. The bikes, his Rabbit, anything, really. That's why she never asked anyone around the house for help with anything mechanical. If it was broken, it went to Jacob, no questions asked. She noticed his concern when he knoticed her shaking but didn't react, letting it roll off her back like so much water. No more drama for today. She was done.
She couldn't help but snort as he offered her his arm, then headed outside, shaking her head gently. "You're sucha cornball," she commented, gripping his hand a bit tighter as they hit the muddier spots in the yard. She was about as graceful as her mother had been as a human, and mud probably wouldn't bode well with her already-shaking knees. She perched on the only bit of empty counter space she could find once inside, part of her hoping she wasn't in the way and the other half deciding he could work around her. "You do indeed. It's a wonder you haven't fallen yet. And of course I don't mind. You know I love watching you tinker around in here," Nessie replied with a smile, leaning back on her hands and crossing one leg over the other.

Jacob smirked at her response to the "dumping stuff in his garage" comment. He nodded and stated, "That much is true, and as we've said before, boredom and I don't get along so well. So I suppose the fact that I have enough of a talent for these things to draw attention is a good thing, for the sake of the sanity of the general population." Honestly, if Leah thought he was annoying back when his every thought was about Bella, and now when his every thought involved Nessie somehow, she didn't even want to have to deal with him when he was bored. He almost laughed at that mental image. Honestly, he and Leah had gotten to be pretty good friends in the past decade, even if neither of them would say a word about it out loud. Things would get boring if they acted all lovey dovey and he was pretty sure the both of them would get sick.
Jacob beamed with mock pride and responded, "That's me, and I'm damn proud of it." He kept a tight grip on Nessie's hand, knowing that there were times when she was just as clumsy as her mother and the last thing he ever wanted was to see her hurt. He had to wonder if coordination was genetic, and if Edward had been this prone to falling back when he was a human. It seemed like the only thing that would explain how Nessie got as clumsy as she was. But he could never mind, of course. He loved her too much, and at least she hadn't been a danger magnet in years.
Jacob scoffed when she said that it was a wonder that he hadn't fallen. "Nessie, this has been the general norm for a good amount of years. I don't think I'll ever need to worry about falling." He looked over his shoulder to smile at her. "Okay, if you're sure." And with that, he lifted up a bike without even breaking a sweat and brought it to the center of the garage so it'd be easier to fix.
