"You're welcome," Nessie smiled, flipping her textbook shut. No studying was going to be accompished on her part, she could tell this already. Maybe she could go over it with her father tonight? Chances were he knew more than what the book could tell her anyway. Plus, it was more likely for her to remember it. Yeah, that's what she'd do.
She blushed a little as she was caught in her wonderings, looking back at Ruth with a small, apologetic smile. "Yeah, I'm fine, thanks. Just wondering about my best friend. He hasn't called me in awhile and I'm getting a little worried. Jake has a habit of getting into trouble sometimes," she explained, twirling her pencil around in her fingers.
She considered how she was feeling lately, tapping the eraser on the table every now and then. Was she really starting to fall for him? It was beginning to look that way, which was a little scary. But, at the same time, it felt ... right. Like there was no one else in the world she'd rather be with. So natural ... Like breathing. She shook her head gently, sighing a little.

"Oh," Ruth said and by the way she said it wondered if he wasn't more than 'a best friend.' Her heart suddenly droped and her stomach hurt something painful. Why would this bother her? She just had to look at Nessie and see any guy would be crazy not to be interested. She was smart, kind, funny and beautiful. Yes, she was beautiful and Ruth could not deny the fact she thought this. Though, why was she feeling a bit...bad at the thought of Nessie having someone.
"I'm sure he's fine," Ruth said with a small smile, "Maybe you should call him." she suggested

Nessie caught the look on Ruth's face and was concerned. Had she said something wrong? Was she sick? "Hey, you okay?" she asked quietly, sitting up a bit more in her chair in case she needed to jump to action quickly. The thought that she'd been obivous about her feelings for Jacob and oblivious to how Ruth felt didn't cross her mind once. Instead, she smiled a little, nodding. "Yeah, I'm gonna give him a call when I get home, guilt trip him a bit. It'll all be okay."

"No," Ruth lied, "I'm fine, just tired..." she looked at her book and closed it. There was no way she could finish studying now. She was tired and now her thoughts were even more confusing then before now, there was no way she could concentrate on history.
"I think I'll take a nap when I get home," she said, "then study tonight or something." She had to go; she couldn't stay here any longer when her heart felt as if it were burning. She probabaly wouldn't really take a nap, she had a feeling the dreams would come back. Expescially now. "I hope your friend's all right...it was nice seeing you," she said, probabaly the only truth she said, and she toke her book and got out of her chair, preparing to leave.

Nessie grew even more confused as Ruth hurriedly got up, rushing from the table. What on ... What had she said? Furrowing her brow, she turned in her chair, watching her leave for a moment. "Wait, Ruth!" she called, slinging her backpack onto her shoulder and hurrying after her. "I'm sorry ... Did I say something that upset you? I didn't mean to..." She didn't want to nag or anything, but she'd hate to have upset the other girl and not even known it.

"No," Ruth said with a small smile, "Not at all...trust me, you did nothing." She was sorry to be upseting Nessie like this. She wondered if she could say that it was ok, it was alright; she was the one with the problem, not Nessie.
"There are just some things I have to take care of," she said, which wasn't really a lie, she did have to take care of things; these thoughts, these dreams. She couldn't live like this and she knew it. She wished she could talk to someone about this, but who?

"Alright, if you're sure," Nessie replied, not entirely convinced but not wanting to push things either. "Here," she started, ripping a sheet of paper our of a notebook, "let me give you my number in case you ever want to talk about anything. My phone's always on." The top of her tongue poked out of her mouth as she scribbled the number down, then handed the paper to Ruth. "Okay, I can understand that. I just wanted to be sure I hadn't upset you."

Ruth felt horrible. Apparently Nessie felt so bad she felt the need to give her her phone number. It made Ruth feel sick to her stomach to see that she was making Nessie this upset. She wished she could tell Nessie to truth, but if she did, she would be disgusted with her. She might never want to talk to her again. Ruth bit her lips. In yet, was she so cowardly, she'd lie to Nessie, whom she cared for in a way she didn't understand, in order for herself not the get hurt?
"Nessie...I.." Ruth said, trying to form the right words to say, maybe even the truth. But nothing came out. She sighed; apparently, yes, she was this cowardly. She didn't deserve Nessie's kindness right now, she didn't deserve anything.
Ruth made a small smile and accepted the piece of paper, as not to upset Nessie more, but she did wonder if she actually call her. She should, Nessie deserved at least that, but what would she say? "Thank you," she said, "And trust me...this isn't your fault...I'm sorry...I just...have a lot of things on my mind right now." she said, which was true, of course.

Nessie looked up as Ruth started to speak, but didn't pressure her to finish her thought. It seemed the girl was nervous about something, and if it were important enough she'd bring it up again later. Now, it was obvious the other girl wanted to leave, and Nessie wasn't going to hold her up any longer. "You're welcome. And don't worry about it, I understand. Don't apologize for needing to think. Trust me, I know what that's like." She smile reassuringly, pulling her bag up onto her shoulder.

She gave a small smile to Nessie. She was sure what Nessie had to think about wasn't the same as what she was thinking about. She suddenly wondered what Nessie thought about, what did she like, what were her hobbies? Ruth shooed those thoughts out of her mind; this conversations was awkward enough and it was probabaly about time it ended.
"I'll see you at school tommorow," she said with a small smile and left the library.
