Lea sat at her usual table, an old book in her hands, ever so often peering over it, looking at the other tables, the ones filled with jocks and cheerleaders the most, seeing if she could spot out any sign of cruelity. Any sign of wickedness. In short, she was looking for who would become her nightly meal.
She smiled wickedly at the thought, wishing she had been turned a vampire years ago; maybe those asses who'd teased her and countless others would've never hurt her. Now, she didn't have to worry about being hurt, now that she could hurt. She was almost happy she was being outcasted this time, for, no one would ever get suspiscous of her if they didn't even want to be around her; if she stayed invisible in the halls, no one would even look her way if some random girl on the street died. She just wished she could eat more than blood; she did miss human foods at times.

And now came the moment of truth when it came to Zach's first day of school; lunch. This would probably end up being a pinacle moment of his day, if not the next year of his life. Now, Zach wouldn't have minded eating outside if it weren't for the fact that it was currently raining bullets out. Who knew that Forks was so wet? Not that Zach minded that much. It was a pathetic thing to do, letting weather ruin your day. So now he was glancing around the cafeteria, that seemed to be overrun with the color silver (tables, the salad bar, even the tiles of the floor had a gray/silver-ish color) and chatting teenagers. Naturally, he hadn't found his niche at this place yet, even if he had spoken with some people. Speaking of, perhaps he could find Nessie...yet there seemed to be no sign of the auburn locks of the girl. Oh well...surely there was somewhere...
That was when an empty seat caught his eye, and by that seat was a girl, one that he was shocked that he hadn't noticed sooner. For a moment, he found himself staring, something he rarely did, because there was something about her that made it hard to look away. Additionally, he actually felt...nervous, about going up and asking to sit. For God's sake, it was just a seat. And she was just another person, no matter how utterly attractive she was. It wasn't that big of a deal, or at least it shouldn't have been. Yet it felt like there were weights on his feet as he walked forward, tray in his hand, until he finally made it to the table.
"Um...hi...look, this might seem weird but...um...do you mind if I sit here?" Don't blush, don't blush, don't blush, he mentally ordered, because that was hardly an ideal action to take. Why was he feeling like this?! It wasn't the least bit dignified, to say the least.

Lea looked up from her book with raised eyes as she heard someone near her ask if he could sit here. It had to be someone at a nearby table, no one asked to sit here; that would mean a ruined reputation for life. But, here was a boy seeming to be blushing of all things, asking to sit at her table.
"You must be new here," she said. She would save the chewing out for later if he didn't leave. She was in a really crabby mood today and had thought of Catlin all night long. How she wished she could sleep again so her thoughts could rest. But, she couldn't sleep, so for hours she thought of her and right now really didn't feel like dealing with people; even more than usual.
"Do you realize," she said matter-of-factly, "People are staring at you?" And they were. People were gawking at Zach and Lea, some whispering and some just staring with wide-eyed surprised. He would leave as soon as he realized people were staring...that's the way people worked, after all. No body would stay who would make them be laughed at.

He wasn't sure what it was, but the girl seemed quite incredulous about his appearance. Zach bit his lip when he recognized that; was he really being that pathetic? He had hoped he could act somewhat dignified during this, but considering the adjustment and the fact that there was something about this girl that told him that she was...different (and he liked different, that much he knew...this was just the kind of different that left him feeling out of his element), it was miraculous that he hadn't done something silly like dropping his tray or something.
"Is it that obvious?" he asked, a weak smile crossing his face. He was pretty sure that that would lead to permission to sit down, but the fact of the matter was that her next words were far from what he would have expected. "Oh, are they?" he asked, seeming both surprised and curious before he glanced around. Indeed, people seemed to be staring at him as if he had sprung an extra arm or two. That was pretty strange. He turned his face back to Lea. "Well...let them stare. I really have no clue why they would be, but I really don't care."

"If you weren't new, you wouldn't even look in my direction," she said with a roll of her eyes. Seriously, it was as if they all thought she had some disease that they would catch if they looked at her. She had been used to this by now, but it was still annoying. Why did they feel the need to even care if she was different? Really, she didn't get why it even mattered if people were different or not. Oh well, she thought to herself, at least that could all be fixed now. A small smile came on her face at that thought, until she heard Zach speak again and her annoyed scowl came back.
"Well," she said, "If you haven't already noticed, I'm not exactly the most popular here," she said. "Don't care? Don't be ridiculous," she said, annoyed, "Everyone cares...sit with me and you're sure to have no friends for the whole year." He was really naive, wasn't he? He may think he didn't care now, but he would, they all did. The ones who acted as if they didn't care like Lydia soon got tired of being teased, of being ridiculed and left. It was the circle of life, really; if you think you have something great, you'll eventually have to watch it fall to the ground.

Zach was incredibly surprised by Lea's answer, enough that his eyebrows almost knitted together. If you had drawn a line beneath them, there'd be a near perfect triangle. "Now why would you say that?" he asked, his shock very evident in his voice, accent or no accent. As he explanation continued, he felt slightly less confused, but his expression remained essentially the same. "No, I actually didn't..." He frowned when she implied that he couldn't possibly just not care about popularity. Now he was very confused. What had he said or done to make it seem like he was lying? He arched an eyebrow again. "Well, if that's the case, then they were probably very poor people to be friends with anyway...besides, I've already made one friend, and that's a miracle for one's first day."
Okay, so he was joking at that part. He didn't really think that way. This girl just seemed to be in need of a laugh. Honestly, she looked like someone had murdered her cat or something. "Anyway...seriously, do you mind if I sit here? I really have nowhere else to go and honestly, if that's really how shallow people are, I don't want anything to do with it."

Oh God Lea thought in annoyance, Will he not just go away? She thought him seeing everyone staring at him and knowing he would lose any chance of having friends would steer him away, but no, he had the nerve to act as if he didn't care! Everyone deep down cared, it was the way of the world. You wanted to go up in this world, rather in a career or in friends and Zach was taking a long tumble down the social ladder right now. She wondered if he'd blame her once he fell to the bottom like Lydia did. Ask her why she couldn't just be normal for once; then maybe she'd have more friends.
"You don't?" Lea asked, crossing her arms, "You really don't care about being popular or about being outcasted? You don't care about being teased for who you're friends with or what you do? I somehow doubt it...everyone cares, even you, no matter what you say. So," she said sarcastically with a raise of her eyebrows, "Still wanna sit here?"
If anything he thought her weird now. She at least would've scared him off with her weirdness, which didn't matter to her anymore, not when she could get revenge.

Zach was positive that this was a day of surprises. Up until now, they had been okay surprises, certainly not ones that left him completely dumbstruck and horrified. Now there was one thing he could say about this girl; she was downright unpleasant, at least to strangers. There was no possible way anyone could be that negative, right? And yet here she was, tearing down the rest of the world. Most people would have up and ran while they still had some dignity left. Most people wouldn't have stood for this, or stayed near the weird, goth girl for a moment longer. So why was Zach still standing there? The answer was rather simple, particularly for anyone who knew him.
What was going through Zach's mind was nothing short of remarkable, and not necessarily in a good way. Never in his life had he met someone who was so outwardly bitter, and in his experience with anyone bitter, he knew there had to be a reason why that person was the way they were. Ergo, this girl had to have been through some pretty scary stuff to get this way. Soon, surprise was replaced by determination, and the slightest bit of concern. Yes, Zach felt concern for people he met two minutes and fifty seconds ago (not that he had been keeping track). It was just the way he was.
He took a deep breath before he sat straight down, not right next to her, but it wasn't as if they had to shout as if they were across the street from each other. "Frankly, there's no law that says I can't. Now, if it really bothers you so much, I'll be quiet. You won't even know I'm here."

Now Lea was sure this boy was the most dumbest creature on this planet. Did not care about himself, about his life? Did he think that friend he said he had made, why she even remembered he said that in the first place was puzzling, would be friends with him now? Did he realize that at this moment he was basically throeing his life in the fire? Oh, well, this wasn't really her problem so she didn't know why she would care. As long as he was quiet she shouldn't.
"Fine," Lea said with a shrug, putting her face back in her book, "You will wish you have left, just so you know, but if you don't want to, that's not really my problem."

For the first time in his entire time by this table, he all but ignored the girl's comments. Sure, he listened, but he didn't respond. Clearly, she liked it when she had something to argue with, and that wasn't going to make this lunch anymore pleasant. So he simply looked at her with the interested look on his face that would hide the fact that he was desperately trying to figure this girl out. Now that he had this idea that she needed help, he was holding onto it like a dog fighting for a bone. Trying his best to remain passive, he stated, "I'm Zach, by the way. Zach Josanno. And you are?" Little did he realize that this would cause even more annoyance than simply responding to her "you're going to regret this" warnings. But he was a polite boy and wasn't about to sit here without an introduction, at least.

Lea rolled her eyes as the boy introduced himself. This boy was a subborn little fool, wasn't he? Did he really expect her to carry on a conversation with him? Did he really expect her to talk to him? Didn't he know when he should leave? When he should just go? Oh no, he wanted to be 'nice' and 'polite.' Ya...freaking...right. No teenager wanted to be nice and polite, that never made anyone cool, not at all. He was just a stubborn little idiot, is all he was.
"I thought you were going to be quiet," she said coldly, peering up from her book, glaring at him, "I'm Lea, if you must know." This idiot was dangerously mistaken if he thought she'd instantly just trust him just because he sat at her table.

Zach shrugged, smiling apologetically, at her response. "Well, you didn't say whether or not you wanted me to be quiet," he pointed out. Most people would have taken that as a smart alec remark, and he wouldn't have blamed them. Yet somehow, Zach still managed to sound perfectly sincere in his explanation. Honestly, it made sense and you didn't need to be rude to feel like it was necessary to point it out. "But if that's what you really want, then fine...I just wanted to know your name. I mean, I might as well know who I'm sitting with." He offered a weak smile when she finally told him her name, and then fell silent. This was going to be a rough lunch period, but at least he had a place to stay. As much as he wanted to help this girl out, he also didn't want to do anything that would make her angry. She seemed angry enough as it was. He didn't even realize that he was looking at her with curiosity as he ate, trying to figure out a way to figure her out.

"I thought I was pretty clear that I didn't want you to talk," said Lea, rolling her eyes, "Though, people in this town are rather dense."
Seriously, was every school filled with dense retards whose lives revolved around who was wearing the coolest outfit and who was doing who? Seriously, the fact that some of these kids were 18 and were about to be adults was shocking. But, of course, teachers here, who were supposedly mature only cared about how much money they were making and how good they looked to the world. Was the world seriously filled with idiots?
She then noticed Zach was staring at her. She crossed her arms; he was laughing at her on the inside, she knew it, or thinking she was a complete freak. There was no way he could be as uncaring about social standings as he claimed; humans were, by birth, assholes who only cared about reaching as high as they could go.
"Go ahead," she said, glaring at him, "Laugh; tell me how much of a freak I am. I won't mind; if you want to say something, say it."

You would think that he would have gotten angry by now, what with the insults that seem to pour out of Lea's mouth everytime it opened. Yet Zach only found himself mildly amused and puzzled. "Well, I wouldn't know, seeing as I'm new here. Haven't exactly met enough people to gague how intelligent the general population is." Again, he just wanted to know what made Lea feel that way...it was kind of fascinating, figuring out what made people bitter. And if this Lea girl wasn't bitter, than sugar wasn't sweet. Now he noticed that she was glaring at him. Perhaps staring was a bit rude, but it wasn't as if he was ogling her like she was something at a zoo...more like a curious work of art. Yes, that was a good way of putting it, seeing as she was quite attractive, yet there was an edge about her that made it seem foolhardy to associate with her.
However, he was rather surprised at her verbal response to the staring. "Now what makes you think I wanted to laugh? Honestly, laughter is about as far from my mind as it can be right now...at least, it was until you mentioned it. Besides, there's nothing that funny about you."

"They have the intelligence of an ant," said Lea and smirked slightly, "You should relate to them...they have about the same intelligence as you do."
She raised an eyebrow a bit at Zach's comment. Was that not a bit obvious? Her black clothing? The fact she was eating alone? The fact she wasn't even eating, but reading?
"Is the fact that I'm reading instead of eating not give away the fact I'm a freak?" she asked, holding up her book so it was in clear view, "Reading is not exactly cool or popular." She couldn't help but make a snort of laughter. Ya right! Inside, he was probably laughing; there was no way he, or anyone else, could be like this. It was impossible.
